A Challenge…

I need some help. I am trying to find a place in the Bible where God says anything good about debt or owing someone something. You see, I have a problem. If I can only find where God says negative things about something, then I feel compelled to avoid it. God says nothing good about gossip, so I must avoid it. God says nothing good about sex outside of marriage, so I must avoid it. So help me. Help me find some place in the Bible where God says something, anything nice about debt, so I will no longer have to avoid it. Thanks!

  1. OK, I am sensing that your tongue is firmly planted in your cheek on this one. Just off the top of my head I can think of one instance where God tells the prophet to instruct the widow woman to ~borrow~ as many jars as she can get her hands on because of His plan to fill them with oil for her. (My quickie paraphrase.) So this is one instance of God inspired leverage, borrowing to produce profit. You could say this was a short term business loan that she had the means to pay back (by returning the jars after use.) Of course, this instance can in no way be compared with the idiotic consumer debt that the CC cards are pushing in the media, but since you asked…

  2. Yeah you could look at that passage that way. But I think it is a stretch. And like you said, it really looks nothing like the consumer debt of today. I guess, I look at it this way. If I borrow a hammer from my next door neighbor to hang some pictures. Am I in debt to that person? I would think borrowing a tool would be a far cry from borrowing money to buy a cheeseburger, or a flat screen TV or a house. I mean it was not like she was told to borrow jars no matter the cost or interest.
